Fire Extinguisher Safety Data Sheets (SDS)

Safety Data Sheets (SDS, formerly called MSDS) for the fire extinguisher agents and suppression system agents Associated Fire Protection services and installs. Each sheet opens as a PDF. OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard requires employers to keep an SDS on hand for the hazardous chemicals in their workplace, so you can download and file the ones that match your equipment.

Not sure which agent is in your extinguisher? Check the label on the cylinder, or call us and a technician will tell you.

Need your extinguishers inspected or recharged?

AFP inspects, maintains, recharges and hydrostatically tests portable fire extinguishers across New Jersey, New York and Utah, with our own DOT-certified hydrotest shop. Family-owned since 1947, no long-term contracts and no fuel charges.

Frequently asked questions

What is an SDS?

A Safety Data Sheet describes a chemical's hazards, safe handling, first aid, firefighting measures and what to do after a spill or discharge. SDS replaced the older MSDS format under the Globally Harmonized System (GHS).

Do I need to keep SDS for my fire extinguishers?

If your employees could be exposed to an extinguishing agent, OSHA's Hazard Communication Standard (29 CFR 1910.1200) expects the matching SDS to be readily accessible to them. Many facilities keep a binder or digital folder for their extinguishers and suppression systems.

How often do fire extinguishers need service?

NFPA 10 calls for a monthly visual check, an annual inspection and maintenance by a qualified technician, and periodic internal maintenance and hydrostatic testing based on the extinguisher type. AFP tracks those dates for you and sends the reports to your customer portal.

My extinguisher was discharged. What now?

Any extinguisher that has been used, even briefly, needs to be recharged before it goes back in service. Learn about AFP's extinguisher inspection and recharge service.
